Through a challenging combination of art and chemistry, a Rhode Island artist has perfected the art of manually weathering copper tiles to achieve unusual and spectacular effects. Within her controlled studio, the natural oxidation process – which can result in a rainbow of colors emerging from the copper tile - is sped up through the careful application of various chemicals. Under a watchful eye, her sea-inspired design comes to life. Then, at the exact moment the perfect hue and amount of detail is achieved, the artist immediately halts all further oxidation, capturing the warm sandtones and browns by coating the entire copper tile with a special sealant. Two additional coats are later applied to ensure the colors remain true for years to come.
As a result, each copper tile is painstakingly crafted as a one-of-a-kind piece with outstanding quality. It is surprisingly simple to maintain this quality within your home. No special care is needed. In fact, we recommend only soap and water occasionally. Avoid commercial polish or metal cleaners which can break down the sealant.
Because each piece is an individual work of art, colors and appearance will vary. Mix and match several together on a wall for an ocean-inspired kitchen or bath, or feature one alone as a stunning copper accent piece on a bookshelf or side table (copper stand included). 6” x 6”
Handcrafted in Rhode Island. Found in some of the finest boutiques throughout the United States. Brought to you by The New England Trading Company, Ltd.

Patina is usually a green film formed naturally on copper and bronze by age or long exposure or use, or artificially (as by acids) and often valued aesthetically for its beautiful color. Although patinas occur naturally over time and with nature, the process of oxidation can be sped up through different techniques.
The application of various chemicals to metals as well as some heat processes can create some of the beautiful colors you see in this body of work. The effect of patination of metals such as brass and copper can vary greatly. Colors may range from greens and blues, to brown, reds and golds. The unpredictable nature of this process is what entices the artist to create them. No two colors are ever identical! Only the most alluring colors are picked for the jewelry pieces. They are then “cold connected” by riveting the brass and copper pieces onto sterling silver.
