Like history you can hold in your hand, this heirloom-quality historic wood pen was handcrafted using actual wood removed during the restoration of the famous USS Yorktown. This famous aircraft carrier was on the recovery mission of the Apollo 8 astronauts in December 1968.
The USS Yorktown is a national treasure, having participated significantly in the WWII Pacific Offensive that ended with the defeat of Japan in 1945. She later earned 5 battle starts for service off Vietnam. A Hollywood favorite, the USS Yorktown was the backdrop for the filming of the Academy Award-winning (1944) documentary "The Fighting Lady" and the films "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "The Philadelphia Experiment"
With over 16 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation earned, the USS Yorktown holds a firm place in American history and was formally dedicated as a memorial on the 200th anniversary of the US Navy in 1975.
